Philosophy in the Classroom
For high school teachers
Integrating Philosophy into the Curriculum
Most high schools in the US do not offer philosophy as part of the curriculum. But all high schools offer classes that involve philosophy as one of their components. Adventures in Thinking is offering to help you teach your students the philosophy they need to better understand your subject matter.
Where philosophy fits into the current curriculum.
History: How did the ideas of the Enlightenment affect the French Revolution? How did Marx’s ideas affect the Soviet Revolution?
Literature: Most major playwrights, novelists, and poets were influenced by at least one philosopher. And what exactly is a tragedy?
Government: What is a legitimate government? The US Founders were profoundly influenced by the social contract tradition - but just what did the philosophers in that tradition believe?
Debate: Most formats of debate involve explicitly citing the ideas of philosophers.
We are certain there are still more ways to incorporate philosophy into your classes, and we welcome any other suggestions!
What we are offering.
Adventures in Thinking is happy to:
(1) Help you design the lesson plans that involve philosophy and get you to the point where you feel comfortable teaching the material on your own.
(2) Co-teach the philosophical portions of the class with you.
(3) Decrease your workload by teaching the philosophical portions of your class ourselves.
We are happy to do whatever works best for you and your students!
